The High Holidays are a powerful time of reflection - and The 4th annual Character Day on September 13, 2017 presents a fun and unique way to prepare your communities for this time of year!

Character Day is a global event with free films, resources, and conversation that empower us to shape who we are and develop skills to flourish in the 21st century. Participation is completely free!

Last year there were over 93,000 events in 124 countries and all 50 states participating by screening award-winning films from Tiffany Shlain, the director of “The Tribe,” including The Making of a Mensch film (above), which explores the importance of developing character strengths through the amazing teachings of Mussar.

Character Day and The Making of a Mensch are about life’s important questions: What kind of person do I want to be? What values do I want to bring to the world (empathy, curiosity, kindness, humor, gratitude)? And how can I bring those strengths to the change I want to see in the world? Basically, how can I be more of a mensch?

Premiering this year is a new film, 30,000 Days, about living a life with meaning and purpose. In addition to the short films, there are free discussion kits and online resources, and a global online Q&A featuring leaders in the field of character development and Mussar from all different perspectives. Past speakers have included Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, Jane Eisner, editor-in-chief of The Forward, and Alan Morinis, leading figure in the contemporary revival of the Mussar movement.

Want to get involved? Here's how Character Day Works:

  • Character Day is completely free, thanks to generous support from foundations such as The Covenant Foundation, The Jim Joseph Foundation, Lippman Kanfer Foundation for Living Torah, The Righteous Person's Foundation, PJ Library, Natan Fund, and more.

  • Your Character Day event(s) can look and feel any way you would like it to be.....any time of the day, anywhere, and any size.

  • The Character Day team provides your group with Films, the Periodic Table of Character Strengths Poster, printed discussion materials, a robust online hub of resources, and an online conversation with leading experts on Character education from multiple perspectives.
