Service Learning Model: J-Life
Update (June 2017): Tikkun Olam Community Synagogue of Rye, Rye, NY
Model Description | Update 2017
Current Status:
Family learning at Community Synagogue continues to be a priority. Due to competing bids on time, the K-2 program was moved from Saturday mornings to Wednesday afternoons (4:00-5:45 pm). This new day and time has led to structural changes in the model. Several times a year, the whole family is invited to join their child at 5:00 pm to celebrate holidays and engage in activities that build upon the learning theme. In K-2 the focus is on mitzvah heroes, Shabbat and tikkun olam; these themes are presented through a rotating three-year cycle. Various holidays have also been the focus of the learning.
J-Life continues to take place on Saturday mornings for the 3rd and 4th graders. The theme is Torah in third grade and holidays for fourth grade.
Based on parent feedback, a new model, I-Select (another model in the synagogue), was created and implemented for 5th and 6th grades. I-Select responds to the need for choice and variety in both subject and timing. In addition, I-Select unites the traditional track learners with their alternative learning track, Chavurah for family learning together.
As part of J-Life, there is always something sent home to extend the learning.
Reflections of the Educator:
One of the successes of J-Life is that it continues to build community among parents. Most of the learners who started in kindergarten have stayed to continue going on to the upper grades. Parents express that they have a lot of fun participating in J-Life and that they enjoy coming to these experiences. This appreciation is evidenced by a strong attendance rate in most grades.
